Activity overview

Learn the skills and techniques needed for survival in Winter Alpine environments: Navigate terrain in snowshoes, build shelters and learn how to locate your friends in an avalanche. You will have the chance to learn skills and techniques that are vital for survival in Winter environments in this activity.

KISC guides will take you through snowy forests on snowshoes to a viewpoint above Kandersteg. Along the way, they will teach you about emergency shelters, how to find your friends in an avalanche and some survival first aid.

Schedule

Meet your guide at the Centre, have an equipment check, collect your snowshoes and prepare to leave

Learn about the avalanche dangers and then leave the Scout Centre on snowshoes, heading towards the Höh viewpoint. Your activity guide will also play games with you in the snowshoes

Learn about winter first aid and play some games about the winter injuries
11:00 / 11:30
Learn about avalanches and practice your rescue skills with an avalanche transceiver workshop
13:00 / 13:30
Eat lunch at the Höh viewpoint with a view across the snowy roofs of Kandersteg village
13.45 / 14:15 Build a fire to make some tea

Begin to snowshoe back to KISC, through forests and across fields, playing games on the way

Stop in a clearing and learn about emergency shelters

Return to KISC

This activity has two timetables to create a better experience for participants. 

This is only a guide. Times will change according to the weather and the group’s ability.

Guest cancellation:

  • Less than 7 days before activity: fee of 50% of the price per person
  • Less than 48 hours in advance: non-refundable
Important information 
  • A leader or responsible person over 18 years old must be present as part of the group
  • This activity is available from December 26th 2023 to February 24th 2024
Equipment 
  • Ski trousers and jacket, thermal underwear, warm clothes
  • UV/sun protection cream and lip protection (minimum factor 15+)
  • Sunglasses or ski goggles with good UV protection
  • Warm hat and gloves - preferably waterproof
  • Rucksack
  • Full water bottle - minimum 1 litre
  • Reusable lunch box with your packed lunch
  • Waterproof hiking boots
