Reality Exceeds Any Photo13.05.2015
Being here at KISC as a Pinkie may be different than what you expect. Before arriving this spring, I had spent years looking at the website, reading the blogs, and following what was happening. There was a photo of the chalet at KISC as my computer desktop. Once I had discovered KISC, I knew I wanted to be there someday. The images were set strongly in my mind.
It was quite an experience to look out the train window and finally see KISC in real life! I had stepped into the image that had been in my mind all those years. But this was just the beginning. In the days to come, I experienced firsthand the beauty of the reality of KISC. I learned that my fellow Pinkies are incredible, talented, and kind! The guests here at KISC are interested and excited to be here. The surroundings are beautiful and the Centre is full of life and progress. These all make me smile! Reality far surpassed the photo.
Being at KISC at this time of year means getting to go on hikes as they are increasingly freed of the snow that covers them. And the international friendship is as alive as ever! Just recently I went on a hike to Oeschinensee, a beautiful alpine lake. Among us 9 hikers, there were 8 countries represented – and 4 different continents! While hiking, it’s fun to take pictures to try and capture the views and create images that will serve as reminders of the experiences but, as everyone knows, reality exceeds any photo.
One of the most prevailing themes at KISC is learning. I get to learn about hiking, Scouting, Switzerland, food, cultures, communication, teamwork, and so much more. We are all constantly learning how to keep the dream alive. We are all constantly striving to make the reality of KISC better than any expectations.
Things are not always what you expect; they may be more difficult, more demanding, or simply…different. And that is ok! Being here at KISC I’ve seen that things are not what I expected them to be – they’re better. Reality has surpassed the photo.
