Ground Floor - Week #4 and #5: The plaster boards and the steel beam18.10.2009
Another week, another story... and now we are ready to update you on the latest happenings of the Ground Floor Renovation! This is going to be a very interesting post as we are going to talk about not one, but almost three weeks of work!!!
We left you talking about a still fresh concrete floor, all the Pinkies packing away decorations, folders, computers and stationary and saying their last goodbye to the old Reception Office; and it is from this point we are going to restart our story.
The Coffee Bar was emptied of all the chairs, posters, scarves and of the big leaflet cupboard and Reception moved out their last bits and pieces.
It took a whole day for the STS to take apart all the desks, tables, benches and shelves and clear the area of all the bits of wood, cables and screws.
It felt very strange to see Reception empty, everything gone. Suddenly it looked kind of sad not to see the big (and not very loved) Lego board on the wall, the Lost and Found cupboard empty of its treasures... and for some people even the desk they worked at for few years of their life taken apart!
All this sounds pretty dramatic, the end of an era, the beginning of something completely new... but don't get us wrong - we are all very much looking forward to the new Ground Floor and in the mean time we are enjoying ourselves with our new but temporary set up.
It is enough to look at the temporary Reception location to smile a lot! Oh yeah, our Reception Manager and our Assistant Programme Director found their new little "corner of paradise/shoebox of love" in the Internet Café/First Aid Room. Thanks to a nice arrangement of the furniture and to the dimensions of the room they are now working in a very cozy atmosphere!
So once everything was cleared of all the furniture and glass the old Reception front wall was pulled down and at its place we got a big steel beam. This beam runs all the way from the New Chalet wall to the Old Chalet and rests on some steel columns. It replaces the old Reception front wall in holding up the ceiling of the Reception area.
Also the old Chalet Shop walls have been taken down entirely so that now it possible to see the whole open area as it should look once the work will be finished.
As you can already imagine it has been a very hectic couple of week for Paul and his crew even though some of the more "delicate" jobs have been done by external companies, such as the steel beam and the concrete floor which has now been finished. Once the new concrete floor dried completely, a layer of insulation was laid on top of it. Then the floor was finished off with a layer of cement which stopped us walking on it for four more days.
The ex Old Main Hall ceiling and walls have been completely fire proofed with the plaster board and now all the electrical and internet cables are being settled. Part of the ceiling is also being prepared for the new walls which will create the corridor.
In the past days Paul and the STS are moving towards to the ex Swing Office, Director's Office and Leaders' Room area with the fire proofing. First they are putting up a metal structure to carry the ceilings and then they are fixing the plaster boards to it.
Also they are starting to clear away the leftover material from the ex Eco Room and ex Programme Office so that everything will be ready when the plaster company moves in on Monday (19.10.2009).
It is getting clear, now more than ever, that a new era is starting, so for all of you, staff and guests, that have lots of memories of the Ground Floor, hold onto these memories and get ready for a new experience, the Next Generation Chalet Experience!
