Hiking Season Begins!
Long gone are the snowy days that defined our first weeks of the spring season at KISC. Now the sun shines, the rain rains, and Kander is getting bigger and bigger! The hiking season is finally here and I will tell you a bit about my latest hikes.
Last week I went to hike on the other side of the Lötschberg tunnel. It’s a really cool hike maintained by the Railway Company. We caught the train in Kandersteg, crossed the tunnel and got out on Hohtenn Station, from there we hiked on the side of the mountain so we were always accompanied by the railway and an awesome view of the valley. It’s HUGE compared to the Kander Valley, and just as beautiful. On the way we crossed a really high train bridge, went through some tunnels and came across lots of points with interesting information about the railway, and the valley.
Did you know that the railway company had to buy a whole vineyard just to use a little bit of it because the owner wouldn’t sell them just the area they needed? Crazy!
When we reached Ausserberg Station we caught the train back to Kandertsteg. What is special about this hike is that it goes through all the train stations until Brig. So you can make the hike as long as you want.
Yesterday I went to a cheesery. For me this was a really special hike because it was the first "real" hike I did this season. We went across ice, more stairs that I could ever count, a really nice waterfall and a muddy, really muddy path. It was a really beautiful yet demanding hike for me. The feeling you get when you finally reach the top you have been imagining for kilometers it’s just priceless! When we got to the top, we took some really cheesy pictures to go with the cheesery theme. And you know why do they build a cheesery up in the mountains? Well, basically here in Kandersteg there's a type of cheese that can only be done high up in the mountains and guess what? Its called Mountain Cheese!
Workwise, business as usual. The deep cleaning of the kitchen is over so we can use it again. We continue the deep cleaning in house and this week the Dutch Chainsaw Work Party is here, so we get to stack lots and lots of wood.
Unfortunately our shortie season is shortening every day. But there is a lot more hiking to come! The Huts are opening soon! And that, that‘s why I am smiling!
