Messengers of Peace - foodKINDServing food in Thessaloniki, Greece
During the Summer at KISC, we donate 2CHF from every BBQ eaten at our weekly International BBQ to a worthy cause. In 2016, we raised nearly 8,000CHFs for foodKIND, a charity which has very close ties to the Centre. foodKIND was set up by a Scout and KISC ex-staff member in response to the worsening refugee crisis and the deteriorating conditions across Europe.
foodKIND is a humanitarian organization with a very simple mission – to provide food and compassion in situations where people do not have access to regular food supplies and where basic human needs are not being met. Currently, the majority of foodKIND’s work is focused on supporting refugees who have fled to Europe with the hope of finding safety and security for themselves and their families. Unfortunately for these people, the conditions in and around the refugee camps are often basic with limited access to essential supplies such as clothing, medical care and food.
That’s why at foodKIND, the aim is to provide aid and support to people who can longer provide for themselves.
With the money raised by the generous supporters of KISC, foodKIND will be undertaking a special mission which will be organised and run completely by Scouts! During this mission, Scout volunteers will be working to provide daily meals for refugees who are living exposed, on the streets of Europe, with no formal support and very little aid. Alongside the provision of food, the Scouts will take time to run Scouting activities for the younger members of the group to distract them from their current situation and to provide them with basic Scouting skills which will help them on their journey. After the mission, Scout volunteers will be encouraged to go back to their own communities to share their personal experiences and spread the word.
With such a great partnership, the foodKIND Scout mission promises to be a huge success. With Scout volunteers from around the world coming together to provide support and friendship to those in need and to show strength and humanity in an extremely challenging environment – it’s something that both KISC and foodKIND can be very proud of!
