Visit KISC's newest Alpine hut at the far end of the Gasterntal, half way up to Lötschenpass. Located at roughly 1,900m it is the ideal starting point to explore the higher regions at the border to Wallis and the Gasternal. During Summer we use the hut as a base for a number of guided hikes and hike 'n' climb activities. The hut can of course also be booked by unguided groups.
Note: The hut is open from around June to September, and cannot be booked on Saturday nights.
Gfellalp consists of 3 seperate huts, with total space for upto 43 people in Alpine style bunks. The main hut has a fully equiped kitchen as well as 3 seperate eating/common rooms and bunks for 16 people in 1 room. 2 other huts nearby have 3 more dormitory rooms - with 21, 10 and 6 bunks in each.
The hut has a sleeping capacity for up to 40 people in alpine bunks. It has a fully equipped kitchen, with all the utensils you will need; you do not need to take any cooking or eating equipment up to the hut with you. There is also a general living / eating room, and toilets - the facillities are basic, but the views superb! Pillows, blankets and duvets are provided at the hut but you will need to take a sheet sleeping bag liner. Sheets can be borrowed from reception at the chalet for CHF 3.
There is always a KISC Staff member at the hut when groups are booked in to stay overnight. Upon arrival at the hut you will be given a check-in and shown where to sleep and the rules of the hut. Unless you have a reservation at the hut, the hut will be unattended and locked!
LOCATION AND ACCESS
Gfellalp is located at the far end of the Gasterntal, half way up to the Lötschenpass. The Gastern valley is one of the most spectecular valleys in Switzerland, with views of snow capped moutains and ancient glaciers. It takes about 4 - 4.5 hours to hike from the Centre to the hut, or about 1 hour from Selden. It is possible to drive or take the bus to Selden. To drive up you will have to purchase a permit at the base of the road - SFr. 8.50 will get you one days access to the valley. The bus to Selden leaves in front on the Centre and it has to be booked in advance at reception. Single tickets are SFr. 12.50 for an adult and SFr. 8.50 for a child.
There are two options for catering at the hut. The first option is to bring all your own food and make use of the kitchen facilities - gas and use of the kitchen including pots, pans and cutlery are included in the overnight fee. The second option is to book a hut food package. This means you only carry up the fresh ingredients and make use of the dry non-perishable staples stored in the hut. More details can be found here.
When catering in the hut we also ask that you prepare food for the KISC Staff staying in the hut. This saves everyone the effort of preparing two meals and also helps to contribute to the spirit of international friendship!
WHAT TO BRING
Apart from sheets and the food outlined above, make sure you bring lots of warm clothes and all of the equipment outlined in the Alpine Equipment List [pdf]. It is also a good idea to bring some indoor shoes/slippers if you have them for inside as no hiking boots are allowed inside the hut! We also recomend taking a torch - although there is lighting inside the huts, the sleeping rooms are a short outside walk away from the kitchen.
Reservations for the hut can be made from March 1st by emailing the programme team.
The cost of the hut is SFr. 20.- per person per night and is payable at Reception.
Gfellalp is a dry hut which means that no alcohol is allowed at the hut. Quiet time is from 22:00.
