Staff Organisation
The Centre is part of the World Organisation of the Scout Movement (WOSM). Since 1923, it has operated with the objective of furthering international and personal development of young people according to the principles of this organisation. The majority of our guests are Scouts and Guides but the Centre is open to anyone to come and stay.
Every year, over 70 Scouts and Guides come as volunteers to the Swiss Alps to realise their Dream and to make the Dream happen for all our guests. It is because of all the hard work of these young people that Baden-Powell's Permanent Mini-Jamboree is alive today.
How is the Centre organised? Firstly, of course, there has to be somebody in charge! We have a full time Director, who is employed by the KISC Association to run the Centre and who also spends time working on projects as a member of the World Scout Bureau - European Regional Office staff.
Then we have the Short Term Staff (STS), Scouts and Guides who come to work in Kandersteg for 3 months. A new team of Short Term Staff arrives every December, March, June and September, does lots of different work, has a lots of fun and leave as friends! During summer, there are between 27-30 Short Term Staff, in the other seasons, we have around 6-8. Eventually though, they have to leave and a new group of Short Term Staff arrives. However, many apply to come back and work again, either as Short Term staff or as ...
... a member of the Long Term Staff (LTS). Nearly all these people started by working here as Short Term Staff and chose to return to work at the Centre for a longer time. The Long Term Staff are important as they provide the link between the seasons and their different Short Term Staff teams. Some LTS work here for 4 months during summer, some for 9 months and other for several years, all doing specific jobs at the Centre. In summer, there are about 20-25 Long Term Staff and during the rest of the year we have about 10.
We also have:
- Helpers: helpers are mainly but not only Ex-Staff members who come back to help a Staff Team when it is very busy and for a generally a short period (1 or 2 weeks)
- High Season Staff (HSS): are Ex-Staff members who come back for a 6 weeks periond over the peak of the summer season. Job details are in the restricted Ex-Staff section.
- Interns: Scouts and/or Guides that need to fulfil a work experience period or a n internship period. More info under "Internship"
