Warm welcome hug for Winter 201407.12.2013
The snow is deep, everyone is trying out skiing and competing to make the most handsome snow man! Kandersteg village is well decorated for Christmas and has flood lights for night skiing. Everyone is slowly getting into the Winter mood and all that the new season has to offer.
The last two weeks have been quiet here at the Centre but, busy in the Scouting world and KISC has been actively involved. On 23rd November, Rex Smith (UK) represented KISC in the TSA International Conference in Central London. About 65-70 Assistant County Commissioners (International) or International County Advisers participated, including representatives from Scotland, Wales, Northern Ireland, Jersey and Guernsey. In the opening session, the International Commissioner of the United Kingdom Scouts, Mr Nigel Hailey revealed that, during 2013, Switzerland was the top International destination for UK Scouts, accounting for between a quarter and a third of all overseas participants from the UK, most of them visiting KISC.
On the 23rd -24th November, the Centre took part in the Kandersteg village annual Christmas Bazaar, where children and adults alike won Jubilee merchandise and enjoyed the peddle-powered fruit smoothies made by KISC`s famous ‘juicinator’. During the same day, KISC was represented by the General Director, Myriam Heidelberger (CH) in the recently ended 1st World Scout Education Congress in Hong Kong. Among the many interesting topics covered in the conference was the communication workshop which focused on listening. It was revealed that listening well is a complicated process which involves “viewing, feeling, understanding,” and therefore consists of much more than only “lending your ear” to the talker. In regards to Scouting, Mr. Eduard Mallory explained in very clear words, that Scouting is a learning experience, teaching children and youth to become World Citizens. The Scout law is nothing other than an educational concept, written by Baden Powell. The last message of Baden Powell, often used as an inspirational quote, can be understood as the toolbox for the education of Scouts..
