Ice, Ice, Baby!13.01.2012
I have now been selected as the Smile of the Week - a title that I’m really pleased with, but came completely unexpected because I've spent the last few days in bed trying to fight a cold.
But one thing is for sure: I wouldn’t have been chosen as Smile of the Week if my fellow Pinkies didn’t know that I’m enjoying my time at KISC to the fullest, which I really am!
Whether I’m guiding a ski group, hiking in the amazing mountains or looking for dirt on the daily cleaning, life here in the Alps is always exciting!
Although I’ve only spent a month here, there is no doubt that KISC is just what I’ve been in need for. After 20 years in a big city, I am grateful for having the opportunity to become a part of this world, which in many ways is so different. For example, it is a huge relief not having to check your mail every day and feel attached to a silly smartphone, but just take one day at a time and enjoy the atmosphere and magic of living in the middle of the Alps.
January is not one of the busiest months at the Centre but there are a lot of activities and exciting events running in the town. My high of the week was definitely the Ice Climbing Festival, held at Gemmilodge only a few minutes away. It started Friday afternoon when our Reception Area, in the time of only a few hours, was filled with gear, duffel bags and not least of all plenty of good-looking ice climbers. The big climbing competition was held on Saturday, where we and the many other interested spectators enjoyed the glühwein and the sight of many climbers scaling the rockface, hoping to set a new time record. The weekend's festivities ended with a big party at a nearby hotel where all of us Pinkies had a fantastic evening, which included a joyful meeting with the world class climber Ueli Steck!
