Dear friends,

Brr…feel that cold breeze? It is time to bring out winter woollies and get the fireplace going. Winter has arrived to Kandersteg! As we draw to the end of the beautiful Autumn season, it’s time to welcome winter with an update on what happened at KISC.

The heating replacement

The temperature during November didn’t just drop down rapidly outside, but also dropped in the Chalet due to shutting down the heating for reconstruction. The Wood-fuelled heating system broke down in March and needed replacing. Thanks to the financial assistance of the KISC Foundation and the hard work of the contractors involved, we are now pleased to have a warm Chalet again. Due to work on the heating, our Staff members had to move from their Staff accommodation in the New Chalet to the Sunneblick. Our guests were all staying in the Kanderlodge, but nowadays everybody can enjoy their stay in the Chalet while watching snowfall.

KISC out and about

During the Autumn season KISC took part in a number of events. More than 200 Scouts and Guides, among them also the Pinkie from Australia, gathered in Porto (PT) for a unique event – the Academy, which is a training, sharing and networking event for the European Scout Region. Here we had a chance to share a story of Permanent Mini Jamboree and also use our exhibition to show to everybody what KISC has to offer them. Further, Scouts and Guides could come by the KISC stand at the Conference of Swiss Scouts and Guides and at other national events in Belgium, the United Kingdom, Portugal and Spain. To be present at these events wouldn’t be possible without a help of our Supporters and Ex- Staff, so thank you very much!

Staff Opportunities

Are you looking for a new challenge next year? Do you feel like a change of scenery? As usual, we are looking for enthusiastic and motivated people who are ready to learn, work hard and contribute to the Centre with their skills and scouting spirit. Online now are positions for between 4 and 12 months and they range from Campsite and Programme to Shop and Catering. All the positions have a starting date in 2016, but we are looking for Caterer and Catering Assistant who can start as soon as possible. Take a look here to see what might suit you best and if you know of any non Ex-Staff who might be interested in applying, we would be grateful for you passing on this information to them.

The end of the Autumn season brought us new additions to the Long Term Staff and Senior Management Teams. To ensure the smooth running of the Programme, Administration, Catering and House departments we have Scouts and Guides from Denmark, Iceland, Italy, Lithuania and Sweden. The SMT welcomed one new member, the Internal Services Director, Erling from Norway. With the excitement from our new members of the Pink family also comes sadness from saying goodbye to our friends who have been working here for a year or even more. Thank you all for your hard work and keeping the dream alive.

Grounds update

Thanks to the Work Parties and our Pinkies throughout the season, we were able to finish many projects before the snow came. The work included rebuilding campfire circles, fixing fences on the Campsite, wood stacking for next year, dinning hall painting and never ending leaf collecting. We are proud to have a new Campsite gate, a new room for the Helpers in the Kanderlodge, but most of all, many new friends and stories. Nowadays our Grounds Manager is busy with his typical winter job - snow clearing!

Gone home

We inform you with immense sadness that one of the Members of the KISC Association, Dr. Baldur Hermans, passed away on the 24th of November. Baldur had been the International Commissioner of the DPSG and for nine years was the Secretary General of the International Catholic Conference of Scouting. He will be missed by many, but his legacy and impact will never be forgotten. We share our condolences with Baldur’s family.

Yours in Scouting,

Katarína Mitríková (SK)
