Stories from africa
Here at KISC we try out best to help others. Among the projects KISC has contributed to is the Malaria Education and Prevention Programme run by the Equator Scout Group, in Uganda.
Head of this project is Ivan Gidds Bambaga, who has been Staff at KISC in both 2009 and 2010. He is working on a number of community based projects in a village in Nabweya. Central to the project is the idea that fighting malaria is a number one need for development and growth both in the village and in many rural areas of Africa. Together with the Equator Scout Group, Gidds is both educating people about malaria's risks and fundrising to help prevent the disease.
A first big step was accomplished during 2010, when Gidds, supported by Kandersteg International Scout Centre, purchased 120 malaria nets for his village and funds for building a structure for health education sessions. The Equator Scout Group tthen visited all families in the village, assessed the situation of the homes and informed the population on the type of support that could be offered. The malaria nets were then distributed to those most in need.
Despite the costs, they are intending to do the same for many other villages and hope this work will help to combat malaria in Uganda. KISC is supporting those Scouts in their own, honorable cause by selling in the shop Ugandian handmade traditional bark cloth hats. By purchasing one of those hats everyone can directly contribute to the purchase of more malaria nets, malaria medication and educational tools.
Stories from the alps
Life in this corner of the Swiss Alps is never really boring! We are quickly moving toward a new season, leaping from one exciting week to the other... Klondike with hundreds of Boy Scouts of America living in Europe, Pack 130 with more European-Boy Scouts of America, Belle Epoque Week and School Day with a few hundred teenage students from a nearby town spending a day out in the snow!
Cherry on top was the Kandersterger Nordic Day, which took place last Saturday at the village. This is a fun crosscountry ski race organised every year for great entertainment of all people at the village and also of the Staff here at KISC! Once again the Crazy Pinkies Team hit the piste with colourful outfits, tons of face painting, almost no clue about crosscountry skiing and a good spirit... this unfortunatly was not enought to win though. We ended up at the 17th place (on 26th in total) - not great as we did almost as good as the local ice hockey team. We definitely were not the fastest, neither the ones to make the most laps, but we had a gorilla (called Harry... like Harry Potter!) on our team!
