Snowflakes keep falling on my head
A busy few days! Another season changeover just took place at KISC and we all had to say goodbye to the Autumn Short Term Staff, or at least some of them as a good deal of the Autumn Staff stays a few days longer as Helpers with us. At the same time everyone was also looking forward to the new Winter 2012 Short Term Staff arriving! But first things first.
The last week of the Autumn season saw the highly anticipated Staff Day Out. This time, the organizers had managed to keep the details about this top secret, so no one really know where we were going to. After a rich breakfast, it turned out we were heading towards Avenches, in the canton of Vaud, to visit a Roman amphitheatre. Unfortunately it was raining quite a bit, so after about half an hour we left for some hot chocolates in a local Café and then continued to Payernes to go karting. For most of the people this was the highlight of the day and fierce battles for the podium - the last Formula 1 season looked like a turtle race compared to this - broke out. In the end, Jenneke (NL) was the big winner of the day! To cool down the adrenaline, the afternoon was a lot quieter with a visit to the Cailler chocolate factory in Broc - heaven for people as addicted to chocolate like us Pinkies! The day was rounded up with a nice dinner at the Doldenhorn Hotel back in Kandersteg!
The day before Staff Day Out another exciting evening took place: After several months of hard work by Michael (DE), helped by Summer and Autumn Shorties, the renovation of the Irish Room came to an end! With a little ceremony attended by all the Staff present in the Centre that day, the room was opened up for guests again. The new and refurbished Irish room looks a lot brighter than it did before while keeping its special characteristic of having beds above the entrance with the ladder to reach this area going up along the Centre's chimney inside of the room. Also the old, rustic-looking wooden beams add a nice touch to the room, connecting the old with the new and reminding visitors of the history of the Old Chalet. All these elements made the room already a new favourite among Staff and we are sure that future guests will enjoy the room equally the same. Now we are just waiting for new decorations and the officiall opening of the room!
And while Friday after Staff Day Out was the day to say goodbye to the Autumn Short Term Staff, the day after the Centre granted a warm welcome to the Short Term Staff Team for Autumn. We say hi and welcome to the KISC family to Adam (SD), Irene (CH), Julie (DK), Nicole (AU), Pavel (CZ), Pete (AU), Sam (BE) and Simon (SE)! All of them are very enthusiastic and excited for the season to come, being trained on all there is to know about the Centre and Staff life at the moment.
But not only did we welcome new Short Term Staff: A week before the Autumn STS left, a whole bunch of new Long Term Staff arrived that will help running the Centre for the next year. Thus KISC welcomed Caoimhe (IE), STS only this Autumn and now House Assistant, Catarina (PT), STS Summer 2011, now back as International Friendship Assistant, Jeanette (SE), Reception Assistant after being STS in Spring 2011, Johan (SE), now House Manager after having served as STS in Autumn 2010, Melanie (UK), Programme Director, former Summer STS in 2011, and Sean (US), returning after Spring 2011 as Catering Assistant.
Snow has finally arrived in Kandersteg as well! While it already snowed a bit the days before Staff Day Out, it disappeared rather quickly again due to rain on SDO with only small patches of frozen snow remaining. But with some minor snowfalls this week and a lot of snow coming down the entire day today, while the forecasts are optimistic for the next days as well, the entire valley is now white and sparkling. And as the major ski resorts already opened over the last few weeks with some Pinkies already hitting the slopes in perfect conditions, KISC is now ready for the Winter season! There are still beds available for all of our Ski Weeks, so if you feel like going alpine this Winter, why not come for a visit to Kandersteg? We are waiting for you!
